Hedge trim and cleared alley
More Than a Path: Restoring a Classic Totnes Walkway
Some jobs are a real pleasure, and yesterday I spent the day working in the beautiful garden you see here—a classic, original Totnes townhouse, the kind that gives our town so much of its Cottage Gardens charm. These front gardens are part of the town's history, and it’s a privilege to help keep them looking their best.
The vibrant red of the Japanese Maple is stunning, and the path, with its old brick pavers and unique chain edging, has so much character.
This particular garden has some wonderful features. The vibrant red of the Japanese Maple is stunning, and the path, with its old brick pavers and unique chain edging, has so much character. However, a nearby hedge had started to encroach on the walkway, and the path itself had become overgrown with weeds and debris, making the alley-like access to the front door feel cluttered.
The main job was a careful Hedge Trimming to reclaim the path's original width. A good trim isn't just about neatness; it's about giving other plants, like that gorgeous Japanese Maple and the big, healthy hydrangea, the space and light they need to thrive. By cutting the hedge back, we immediately made the whole area feel more open and welcoming.
With the hedge sorted, I could focus on the walkway itself. This was a classic Garden Clearance task. I spent a good amount of time on detailed Weeding, getting into all the gaps between the brick pavers and clearing the soil that had buried the decorative chain edging. It’s this attention to detail that really brings a period feature back to life. It’s no longer just an overgrown alley; it’s a beautifully framed entrance to a historic home.
The result is a space that now feels cared for and respected. The whole front garden now does justice to the classic townhouse it belongs to. The Japanese Maple is a proud feature, the hydrangea has space, and the historic brick path provides beautiful access. This is what my Town Gardens service is all about—making the most of these special spaces.
