Hedge Trimming & Pruning
Quiet precision for your garden boundaries.
A hedge is more than just a property line; it is the frame for your garden and a vital highway for local wildlife. At Totnes Gardening, I treat hedge cutting as a craft, not a chore.
Whether you have a formal Box topiary that needs a delicate trim, or a sprawling native mixed hedge that requires a seasonal cutback, I bring the right tools and the right knowledge to the job.
🤫 The "Quiet" Difference
Hedge trimming is notoriously noisy—but it doesn’t have to be. I use professional battery-powered long-reach trimmers. They provide the same power as petrol engines but without the roar and the fumes. This means I can work on your boundaries without disturbing you, your neighbours, or the wildlife nesting nearby.
📅 Seasonality & Nesting Birds
As an environmentally conscious business, I adhere strictly to best practices regarding wildlife.
The Main Cut (Sept – Feb): For heavy reductions, agricultural-style cutting, and roadside banks, we work outside the nesting season to protect our bird populations.
Summer Maintenance: For formal garden hedges (like Leylandii, Yew, or Box), light trimming is permitted during the warmer months to keep lines sharp, provided a thorough check for nesting birds is completed first.
If I find an active nest, I will always recommend delaying the work. Nature comes first.
Our Services
Formative Pruning: Encouraging young plants to thicken up and create a dense screen.
Maintenance Trimming: Keeping established hedges neat, level, and crisp.
Reductions: Carefully reducing the height or width of overgrown hedges to let light back into your garden.
Topiary: Detailed clipping for ornamental shrubs.
♻️ The Cleanup
A great hedge trim is ruined if the mess is left behind. I pride myself on a meticulous cleanup. All trimmings are raked up, blown clear from your borders, and removed from the site. As a Licensed Waste Carrier, I ensure all greenery is taken to a composting facility to be recycled.
