Top 5 Garden Centres Near Totnes

We are spoiled for choice in totnes, but these five spots stand out for their quality, local charm, and plant expertise.

1. Longcombe Cross Garden Centre (Totnes)

You don’t have to travel far for the top spot! Located right on the edge of Totnes, Longcombe Cross is fantastic for convenience without sacrificing quality.

  • Why we love it: It is right on our doorstep, compact, yet packed with quality stock. They often have excellent deals on seasonal bedding and shrubs.

  • Best for: A quick pop-in for essentials, seasonal colour, and supporting a business right here in town.

What’s in the Trolley from Longcombe ?

Looking at my haul, I definitely had a theme in mind: Texture and Contrast.

Fatsia japonica 'Spider's Web': This is the star of the show. You can see it on the left—that stunning variegated foliage with the white "webbing" is perfect for lighting up a shady corner. It adds a tropical feel but is tough enough for our Devon winters.

Salvia 'Amistad': Those deep purple, velvety flowers are still going strong! In our mild South Hams climate, these can often flower well into November and December. They are a magnet for late-season pollinators.

Heucheras & Cyclamen: I grabbed some rich purple Heucheras and bright pink Cyclamen to fill in gaps in my containers. They are the reliable workhorses of the winter garden, providing colour when everything else is fading.

Ferns & Evergreens: To soften the edges, I picked up a lovely lush fern and a wiry, small-leaved shrub (likely a Corokia or Muehlenbeckia) for that architectural, "see-through" look that is so trendy right now.

2. Fermoy’s Garden Centre (Ipplepen)

Just a short drive up the Totnes Road, Fermoy’s is a local staple. It’s perfect if you need a "one-stop-shop" experience.

  • Why we love it: Aside from a vast undercover plant area (great for rainy days!), their farm shop is brilliant for grabbing local chutneys and gifts.

  • Best for: General garden supplies, bird care, and a hearty lunch at the café.

3. Endsleigh Garden Centre (Ivybridge)

A short hop down the A38, Endsleigh is a destination centre. If you are looking to turn your garden trip into a full afternoon out, this is the place to go.

  • Why we love it: It’s huge. Beyond the plants, they have extensive gift, clothing, and pet sections, plus Maidenhead Aquatics is on-site for pond lovers.

  • Best for: Families, Christmas decorations, and a "big day out" shopping experience.

4. Gardentime (Hemborough)

Located between Totnes and Dartmouth, Gardentime has earned a reputation as one of the friendliest centres in the South Hams.

  • Why we love it: It’s independently owned and feels very "Devon." The Glasshouse Café offers stunning views of the countryside while you sip your coffee.

  • Best for: Healthy, locally-sourced plants and a relaxed atmosphere.

5. Plants Galore (Newton Abbot)

Sometimes you just need volume and value. While it’s the biggest on the list, it’s a favourite for Totnes gardeners looking to fill large beds on a budget.

  • Why we love it: The sheer scale of bedding plants and seasonal stock is impressive. It’s often the most wallet-friendly option for bulk buying compost and heavy bags.

  • Best for: Value for money and filling up the trolley.
