๐ผ Wildflower Lawns: The "Strategic Mow"
You don't always need to buy expensive seed packets to create a wildflower meadow. Sometimes, the flowers are already there, waiting for the right moment to bloom.
With over 20 years of experience nurturing gardens across Totnes, Iโve perfected a technique I call "Strategic Mowing."
Itโs not about letting your garden go to ruin. Itโs about cutting the grass with intelligence and timing to unlock a hidden layer of biodiversity. The result? Lawns bursting with white clover, daisies, and buttercups, with bees buzzing all around.
๐ How Strategic Mowing Works
Most people think mowing kills wildflowers. But if done correctly, it actually encourages them. Here is the method Iโve honed over the last four years:
Taming the Grass: By cutting the grass shorter in spring and early summer, I weaken the aggressive, fast-growing grasses. This gives the delicate wildflowers (like clover) the light and space they need to break through.
Starving the Soil (In a Good Way): I always clear the clippings. Wildflowers hate rich soil; they thrive in leaner conditions. By removing the nutrient-rich grass cuttings, we favor the flowers over the thick grass.
Mimicking Nature: My mowing schedule mimics historical grazing patterns. By leaving some patches longer and cutting others short, we create a "habitat mosaic" that supports different insects at different times of the year.
๐ Boosting the Bees in Totnes
Every time I finish a strategic mow, I see the difference immediately.
Bumblebees flock to the red and white clover.
Honeybees work the daisies.
Solitary bees find shelter in the longer fringes.
Totnes has a unique climate (with 800โ1000 mm of annual rainfall), making it the perfect environment for these wet-loving native flowers to flourish. My mowing schedule ensures these flowers provide nectar exactly when the local pollinators need it most.
๐ก๏ธ Peace of Mind: Professional & Responsible
Even though this is "wilder" gardening, it is still professional work.
โ Fully Insured: I hold full public liability insurance for every job.
โป๏ธ Environment Agency Registered Waste Carrier: All those grass clippings I remove to help your flowers grow? I dispose of them legally and responsibly.
โ Registered Company: Totnes Gardening is the trading name of KEVIN IAN HARE LIMITED (Company No. 15593821).
