A New Lawn, Rooted in Totnes Soil

There is nothing quite like the smell of fresh turf. It changes a garden instantly—turning a patch of mud or weeds into a cool, inviting space in a single afternoon.

But at Totnes Gardening, I know that a great lawn isn't just about rolling out green carpet. It’s about what happens underneath.

In Totnes, we often deal with specific soil challenges—heavy clay, shade from town buildings, or steep slopes. If you just slap turf on top, it won't last the summer. My approach is different. I focus heavily on the ground preparation, creating a healthy foundation so your new grass doesn't just look good on day one, but thrives for years.

🌿 Why I Use Local Turf

I don't buy generic turf from big chain stores. I source fresh, high-quality turf directly from South Devon Turf. It is grown locally, meaning it is already adapted to our specific Devon climate and soil conditions. It hasn’t spent days drying out on a pallet; it’s cut fresh and laid fresh.

The Process: More Than Just Unrolling

Laying turf is hard physical work, but it’s also precise. Here is how I approach a turfing job:

  • 🏡 Reading the Land: First, I look at your light and drainage. Does the water sit? Is it a high-traffic area for dogs or kids? This helps us decide on the grade of turf.

  • 💪 The Prep (The Hard Bit): This is where the magic happens. We clear the weeds, rotovate the soil, and level the ground. We remove the stones that cause those annoying bumps later on.

  • 🟩 The Lay: We lay the turf with tight joints to ensure a seamless finish. No gaps, no drying out.

  • 🚿 Watering & Aftercare: A new lawn is a thirsty living thing. I won't just leave you to guess; I’ll give you a clear plan on watering and the first cut, ensuring the roots take hold deep in the soil.

🛡️ Peace of Mind: Professional & Responsible

A big job like turfing generates a lot of heavy waste (old sod, stones, and soil). You need to know that the person working on your property is legitimate and legal.

  • Fully Insured: I hold full public liability insurance for every job.

  • ♻️ Environment Agency Registered Waste Carrier: I don’t fly-tip. All your garden waste is disposed of legally and responsibly.

  • Registered Company: Totnes Gardening is the trading name of KEVIN IAN HARE LIMITED (Company No. 15593821).

🐝 A Lawn Can Be "Green" in Both Ways

I know many of my clients are interested in biodiversity and rewilding. A lawn doesn't have to be a "green desert."

  • 🌼 We can frame your new lawn with wildflower borders.

  • 🍀 We can discuss "clover lawns" or mixed species for better drought resistance.

  • 🍂 We use organic feeds to keep the soil alive.
