Planting for a Spring Spectacle: Tulips, Daffodils, and Alliums
We've been busy transforming the garden for next spring! We just finished planting a dazzling mix of bulbs, including vibrant Tulips, cheerful Daffodils, and dramatic, globe-shaped Alliums.
To ensure a continuous display, we used a layering technique (sometimes called "bulb lasagna"). This involves planting the largest bulbs deepest (like Daffodils and Alliums) and the smaller ones shallower (like Tulips). When they emerge next spring, the customer will enjoy a staggered show of color and height, starting with the Daffodils and ending with the stunning Alliums.
To protect this investment and keep the garden looking neat through the winter, we finished the area with a generous layer of wood chip mulch. This serves several key functions:
* Insulation: It acts like a blanket, protecting the bulbs from harsh temperature swings.
* Moisture Control: It helps the soil retain the right amount of moisture as the bulbs establish their roots.
* Weed Suppression: It keeps pesky weeds from competing with the bulbs next spring, making for an easier, cleaner display.
This bed is now tucked in for the season. We can't wait to see the first shoots emerge! #totnesgardening
