Full Circle in the Summer Heat: A Totnes Cottage Garden, One Year On

Yesterday was a scorcher – the hottest day of the year so far here in Totnes. It was the kind of heat where most people are seeking shade, but for me, it was a day to get out there and see how a special garden was faring in the intense summer sun.

A Year On: Seeing the Results at a Favourite Totnes Cottage

One of the best parts of my job is returning to a garden I’ve worked on to see how it has grown and settled into itself. Yesterday, I had the pleasure of going back to a lovely little cottage I revamped last year – you might remember the story of its Renewal at the Cottage Garden.

Last year, the work involved a very heavy prune. It’s sometimes one of the scariest things to do in a garden; cutting things back so hard can feel brutal, but you know it’s the right thing for the long-term health and shape of the plants. It takes a bit of trust and patience.

Well, a year on, that patience has paid off beautifully.

It was so rewarding to see that the hard cut back has resulted in fantastic new growth. The garden looked great – if not a little wild, but in the best possible way! That’s the wonderful thing about the Cottage Gardens style; it thrives on being a little untamed and full of life. The plants have filled out, the shapes are stronger, and the whole space has that lovely, lived-in feel that is the essence of a true cottage garden.

My job yesterday was just a bit of a tidy-up, some seasonal Garden Maintenance to keep things in check without losing that wonderful, slightly wild charm. It’s a perfect example of how a bold approach one year can lead to a healthier, more vibrant garden the next.

It's a real privilege to be part of a garden's journey over the seasons. Seeing the success of last year's work makes all the effort worthwhile.

If you have a garden that needs a new lease of life, whether it's a major renewal or just some expert advice, I'm here to help.

In Totnes, the summers are comfortable; the winters are long, very cold, and wet; and it is windy and partly cloudy year round.
